Offensive Lineman Clifton Geathers was arrested in an incident at local night club (Club ICE) on Lady Street in Columbia, SC early Sunday morning. Geathers is charged with resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness.
Sources say Geathers was attempting to re-enter the night club to retrieve his cell phone that he had mistakenly left inside. It was at that time a scuffle broke out between Geathers and the Club ICE Security. Police were called to the scene where they too struggled with Geathers in an effort to detain him. After Geathers had been detained officers said that they smelled a strong odor of alcohol on Geathers. Geathers was also using a large amount of profanity and was slurring many of his words while at the scene of his arrest.
After Geathers was detained, he was transported to the Alvin S. Glenn detention center where he was held for approxiamately 5 1/2 hours.
It is the policy of The University of South Carolina that athletes who are arrested, are immediately suspended and remain as such until the case has been resolved. Coach Spurrier nor the University has issued a public statement, as of yet, declaring what Geather's future status may be with the team.
Geathers was expected to play a large role for the Gamecocks on the defensive side of the ball this year. In fact, Geathers was listed as one of the first team defensive ends on the defensive line at the time of his arrest. Geathers had been named the most improved defensive end coming out of spring practice earlier this year. It is speculated that his replacement for any games that he would miss would be redshirt freshman Devin Taylor. Taylor, by some accounts had been providing strong competition for Geathers, and was seriously challenging him for the 1st team position at defensive end.
Geathers logged significant minutes for the Gamecocks last year, appearing in 13 games overall, making 29 tackles and being credited with 1 sack.
